Why start with Plato?

Everything starts with Plato and everything ends with Plato. (Of course there are pre-socratic thinkers of huge interest, but I know little about them. )

Plato is still there, not like a historic curiousity (although he is also that) but as someone who poses some really fundamental questions about 'self' and the construction of the world.

After reading Pierre Hadot's excellent 'Le Voile d'Isis'/ The Veil of Isis, I've begun reding Plato's Timaeus. Alongside that, I'll be reading some of Luc Brisson's work, such as 'Plato the Myth Maker' (Chicago, 1998 ) Original: Platon, lets mots et les mythes (Paris, 1982) to see where it brings me.
